Our bags are made of PU leather and nylon. PU is a synthetic material made out of a type of polymer called polyurethane this material is often referred to as ”vegan leather” because the look and feel is similar to animal leather. We believe that ”vegan leather” is a better option in the making of a bag.

First of all no animal is harmed in the process of making ”vegan leather” but its also a material that is more water-resistant then animal leather and has less weight. The tanning process of animal leather uses chemicals including formaldehyde that are very harmful for the people working in the factories making leather bags. People don’t live very long if they become a tanner in certain parts of the world. There is synthetic material that still have traces from animals in the production but the material Steele & Borough is using have been certified VEGAN from vegan org and animal rights organisation P.E.T.A.

Many of todays most exclusive fashion houses started by making sadels in the 19th century. In the 20th century we do not ride horse to work but we do still think of leather as the goto material for the making of a bag. Non leather bags has an uncalled for reputation of being fake and we would like to challenge that preconception with our bags.
There are various vegan leathers on the market. Two of the most common are PU (polyurethane) and PVC (polyvinylchloride). PU is less harmful for the environment than PVC and that is why all our product with vegan leather uses this type. Today there is a lot of research for new types of vegan leather. Steele & Borough keeps on following this research with great attention and with the aim to integrate future discoveries in the material field to our products when possible.
